Subject:Van down -- DeLand, FL, trobleshooting data obtained to date

This refers to '84 2WD automatic transmission, 1.9L Boston Bob rebuild installed
September 2003.

Thank you for your help to date.

Fuel filter (white plastic check) -- when line to fuel pump removed, gasoline
flowed rapidly from open line. If filter clogged, should not have seen what
appeared to be unrestricted flow. Correct? New fuel tank, fuel gauge, fuel
filter, and tubing from tank to fuel pump installed recently by my mechanic.

Fuel Injection Microprocessor (ECU) -- tried back up ECU maybe some improvement,
but likely not the problem.

AFM -- reworked AFM. Put a drop of solder on top of copper wiper at point of
contact. Wiper is making good contact with contact surface on AFM circuit
board. After to be smooth increase in resistance as wiper assembly moved CCW
from rest position. Only have cheap digital multimeter so not sure if
resistance values I am seeing are any good.

Fuel pressure regulator -- disconnected line to intake manifold and sealed off
end of that line so vacuum connection on regulator is open to atmosphere. Some
success here. Engine runs fairly smooth at 2000-3000 rpm, and will idle down to
around 1200 rpm. Any lower and it dies. Does this finding mean anything?

Questions:

Are there any decent VW mechanics in Volusia county area? Nearby cities are
Daytona, Ormond Beach, New Smyrna Beach, Deltona. Google query points to VW
Service by Ron in Daytona Beach (any good with Vanagons?). I have an AAA-Plus
membership so that will cover 100 miles of towing.

If fuel regulator the problem, any chance of finding one at AutoZone or
equivalent?

Any thing else I should try? Van is in the garage at my DeLand home, but need
to get back to Macon by Sunday evening. I can rent car if necessary.

Thank you for reading?
