Joy - I've been using Dex-Cool in my Westy for over 10 years now and have not had the "reported" gelling problems some people have alleged. But I always change my coolant every two years. I've used mainly Havoline (Texaco) brand, but I believe Zerex and Prestone also offer it as well. I have not used the Valvoline equivalent, mainly because I haven't seen it in my neck of the woods. I buy it at a FLAPS or Wally-World. -- Jim Thompson 84 GL 1.9 "Gloria" 84 Westfalia 2.1 "Ole Putt" 72 411 Station Wagon "Pug" 75 914 1.8 "Nancy" Full Timing Since March 1999 oldvolkshome@gmail.com http://www.oldvolkshome.com Find me on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Thompson/100000710343835 *********************************** On Mon, Dec 19, 2011 at 11:49 AM, Joy Hecht <jhecht@alum.mit.edu> wrote: > The "dex-cool" type is what my mechanic recommended - he said it didn't > matter which brand. Zerex seems to be a brand name for Valvoline, applied > to a number of different products. Any idea whether people are using all > Zerex products, or just the "Dex-cool" variant? > > > > Joy > > > > On Mon, Dec 19, 2011 at 4:02 PM, <mcneely4@cox.net> wrote: > >> Joy, this is reported to be available in Canada, and it is phosphate free. >> Whether it is equivalent to VW blue antifreeze, I could not say, but I do >> know that some vanagon owners use it. If the only criterion is phosphate >> free, this should make the grade: >> >> http://www.valvoline.com/products/brands/zerex/ >> >> mcneely >> >> ---- Joy Hecht <jhecht@ALUM.MIT.EDU> wrote: >> > It appears that it's no longer possible to buy phosphate-free coolant, at >> > least in Canada. VW no longer carries it. They say that their "aluminum >> > core compatible" coolant is a suitable replacement. My mechanic said >> > something similar. >> > >> > What do folks here think? >> > >> > >> > >> > Joy >> >> -- >> David McNeely
