OK -

First, I was remiss in not saying that this issue is on a 1985 1.9 w/auto trans.

Second, as was mentioned earlier - thanks, by the way, i forgot about that as an 
issue - my temp�probe was in error.

Third, that thing is really slow. I left it on the stove, let the water come to 
a boil, and after about�4 minutes (!) the both of them opened up.

There are no problems with either one, except maybe that they are both owned by 
someone so impatient as me...

I had read the Bentley instructions, but was figuring on faster response than I 
got. And not knowing the probe read as far off as it did,didn't help...

Thanks to all who devoted some of thier brain capacity to helping me figure this 
out!
