The synchronizer rings only help to synchronize the gear with the slider for engagement. Worn Syncros means crunching going in and rarely will they actually wear out unless abused by a bad driver or clutch. The slider and hub has the spring loaded detents to keep the slider engaged with the gear. It is this hub that often cracks. Worn teeth on the gear or slider can cause pop out problems. The detents on the selector shaft also help keep things in gear. But if the main shaft is moving too much these things can't work. And here I thought that jumping out of 4th gear was was caused by bad synchros. Had one get so bad that I hooked up a bungee to keep it in gear back in the 70s Sent from Yahoo! Mail on Android
