For air leaks- most professionals use a smoke machine.
This device pumps smokey air into the intake with the engine off.
The smoke will come out of any leaky area.
Since you probably don't have a smoke machine, I saw a video on youtube of a
mechanic using a cigar for smoke.  Just remove a vacuum line and blow it in
the intake tract.
I can't vouch for the effectiveness of this approach but it might be
interesting to try.
If your problem is a leak, hopefully you'll find it before turning green:)

For example, how would I verify "unmetered air"? I'd assume a vacuum gauge
or tester of some sort? But I've never done it.
