leaking ?
is it split ?
or cracked,
or is gooey grease coming out the small end and no clamp is there ?

If the grease is running and dark ...
I'd say it's been in there a long time.

with the wheel on that side off the ground you can wiggle things a
certain way and get some idea of how tired the CV's are on that axle.
you can also just grab the axle near the offending boot and ..one, it
should have nice smooth end play ..like a good half inch ..
and two ...
if you push sideways on the axle end ...you shouldn't hear any cv joint
looseness , noise, or rattle . They start out very smooth and tight.
As they wear, the get loose. Too loose and replacement is called for.

the inners wear more in my experience..due to running hotter by the
transmission, in my opinion.
