Subject:Re: Question about sound-deadening alternatives

I used a peel and stick, polyethylene backed roofing product on my '82 westy back in 2001.

What i found:

- got a lot of material for 100 bucks
- sticks like you-know-what to a bedsheet
- but in some places, ie where I did not completely remove the factory wax on the panels, the stuff sagged. That was in front doors and it was a PITA.
- off-gassing was not noticeable after job done and interior refitted
- stuff still stuck fast to van now (van being slowly parted out, cut up)
- I used up to 3 layers on the panels
- did reduce road noise, but I suspect that for the best job one would back up the peel and stick with some closed cell foam. I tried the vapour barrier enclosed fiberglass method and while I did not get any rust back there, it is a risky way to go. Closed cell foam would not only insulate, but would also provide better sound dampening.

If I was to do it again, I would not go as whole hog with the stuff as I did back then. Only a portion of the sheet metal needs to be covered with the stuff to dampen the metal "membrane". I am going to do it again come to think of it, on my syncro. But this time there will be about an inch of flexible (ie ensolite type stuff) on top of smaller patches of sticky stuff.
