Subject:86 Syncro 2.1 surging at 2K rpm no load

Ok..Here is one I have never seen before..Dennis ? Mark ?
Hold throttle at about 2000 rpm ( out of gear) and it cuts out and drops to
about idle and then back up to 2k and drops again, etc..
Will rev higher if you open throttle quickly and get it above 3k or so.
 Idles fine.
Driving it is much better under load, BUT when shifting mostly between 3rd
and 4th, it cuts out during shifting as it goes thru about 2K and feels
like it slams the tranny up against the body..And yes, its mounts are fine..
If you feather the clutch it will not slam so badly, so its rpm sensitive
more than load sensitive.
Cruising on the road its fine till you shift again. So, it seems to be
mostly rpm related.
Distributor harness feels OK. AFM traces look great. Can hear the throttle
switch click.
Grounds are tight (not cleaned them yet)
I am thinking distributor as it feels like either the fuel is cutting off or
its losing spark for a bit.
