Subject:Re: Why no bolt-on HP upgrades to the 2.1 WBX?

Part of the problem with the WBX is the two ton brick it's pushing. People just don't get excited about performance, but they should. I will tell you that driving a DJ-Code WBX powered 84 Westfalia is like night and day compared to the old 1.9. 110hp and the extra torque at 2700 rpm peak makes a significant difference.

In terms of bolt on you are limited to ratio rockers and exhaust. If you want to split the case, you can install a hotter cam. 2.1 had a chip available. The DJ-code ECU could be used, but it's designed to work with high compression and the DJ distributor. The nice thing about that ECU is that without O2 sensor getting in your way you can enrichen the fuel mixture via MAF tweaking, so you get full use of those cams and rockers.

And if you do all that, you will need an external oil cooler.
