I had similar symptoms last summer. Turned out to be injection pump seal. I got the same quote for a $500 rebuild as you did. Paid with a few weekends of work and a $20 seal and some invaluable experience. You can search for my posts in the archives to see troubleshooting and repair. In particular make sure to eliminate all easy to fix problems first like leaking fuel lines (including the return line and injector lines). Or can the pump get a replacement seal in place as some have suggested to me? If I need a rebuild who./were is a good source? I called PartsPlaceInc. They have mine for $500 plus $34 for a recommend a tool to lock Cam, and a head gasket. If I do this it will be my first deep engine surgery. I'd love to find a coach in the Baltimore -Central Maryland area to work beside.
