We’ve had this vanagon since 97 when we purchased it from the original owner. My husband has been using it as a daily driver until about 3 weeks ago when it began to knock. In his words: “I was caught in stop and go traffic with no place to pull over when the oil light came on. It was on for about 4 minutes before I could get off the road. I let it cool off and added 1.5 quarts of oil and towed to shop. Once arrived at shop, I had to start it to back it off of the flatbed. No oil light came on and the engine sounded fine. I drove it home (about 1.5 miles). No issues, so drove to Fredericksburg and car started to knock. Added a quart of oil and the van made it home, but with a bad knock.” The van hasn’t been driven since that day. I don’t know what the van needs done other than to have this issue solved, but I would like any input on this particular issue. I’d also like to know if anyone on the list would be interested in purchasing it for a project van. It’s the model with the rear facing theatre seats, the z bed and the rubber flooring throughout. I’m really flexible on price, so if you’re at all interested, shoot me an email and come on over and see it. One thing I do know is that the odometer stopped working at 175,000 miles and that was a couple of months ago.
