Ok, so we are supposed to spray a flammable liquid or a flammable gas into the engine compartment to check for leaks? Isn't there a bit of risk in this? I suppose if there is a leak, since this material is being sucked into the air train, it alters how the engine runs, maybe like it is running rich momentarily. But is there a fire risk involved? Sorry to appear so dense, but I have always thought that one wants to keep flammable materials away from the engine compartment, hence all the precautions about fuel leaks. mcneely ---- Scott Daniel - Turbovans <scottdaniel@TURBOVANS.COM> wrote: > I'm so glad you mentioned that for people. > Most people working on their vanagons at home will have ready access to > a can of spray carb cleaner , but not a smoke machine. > > I have not tried it ever, but propane can be used too, I hear. > > On 6/26/2012 8:38 PM, Dennis Haynes wrote: > > Smoke testers are real nice for finding vacuum and vapor line leaks. > > > > Dennis > > > > -----Original Message----- > > From: Vanagon Mailing List [mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com] On Behalf Of > > Scott Daniel - Turbovans > > Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2012 10:41 PM > > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > > Subject: Re: CO Adjusting Screw, Throttle Valve Switch Test Light Video etc. > > > > On 6/26/2012 6:23 PM, neil n wrote: > >> The TB seal may have been leaking. > > Hi, don't you test for intake leaks with spray carb cleaner ? > > that's the common way to find intake leaks on a running engine. > > Or listen with a listening hose, that's very effective too. > > > > I have found as many as 8 to 10 tiny air intake leaks from TB, to plenum, to > > intake runner boots, to the the heads. > > > > one MUST chase down any and all intake leaks, no matter how small, if they > > want the engine to do everything right. > > -- David McNeely
