A short shift kit will only make everything harder and more difficult to do, regarding shifting. higher effort, etc. Dead stock well-maintained and lubricated is perfect. The Inherent Oddness of the 5 speed trans and linkage is another matter, and I can't think of any way to do much about it really - other than keep it perfectly working stock. I bought one from Gene Berg but when I installed it carefully, and I have installed one in a 4 speed before, I could not hit 4th or 5th gears. I tried moving the plate around with no luck. I did not try altering the linkage under the van. I called the folks a Berg and they admitted they didn't really know if it would work although they thought it should. I called Daryl at AA trans ax and he said he had never done one either. Before I send it back I thought I would pole the collective vanagon knowledge base.
