Take the bl**dy dash apart!  I took mine (heavy metal one) apart by myself, using Ben's (Mtl) pictorial.  If I can do it, you can do it, just give yourself time and label all wiring, etc...  Probably needs a good cleaning out anyhow after 20 plus years.  Can probably accomplish several jobs while in there.  In the time you've drilled and typed and prosthetized you could be now putting it back together.  Trust me it is only scary BEFORE you do it.  Afterwards it'll not seem as scary!  Sounds like your ww motor could use good lubrication, etc... at the least.  And you'll have GREAT satisfaction you did it!!!!
