I regularly wear socks with sandals in cold weather.  There is nothing more comfortable (or in the minds of certain colleagues I had for years anti-establishment) than a good pair of heavy wool socks with Birkenstocks on a really cold day.  The only shoes I ever wear any more are Birkenstocks, sneakers, hiking boots, warm house shoes.  The occasion warrants a tie (which I will don under certain circumstances)?  Nice dark silk socks go fine with Birkenstocks.  mcneely
