re gearing for that engine ., non-turbo. I drove an 85 Westy with one, Tires were slightly larger than stock. 2WD stock manual trans. It would barely pull 4th around 52 mph .. had to go down to 3rd to get any oomph., like would have to go to 60or more in 3rd to be able to start getting into the power range in 4th. the owner of the van told me some people with that engine *lower* 4th gear ! And vanagons are quite undergeared too, generally. It was quite smooth at 4K rpm ....and that is where any decent power started to happen. Having just completed a Bostig (and since he's got a Bostig install himself), I asked him his advice on custom gearings. He talked me OUT of putting in a taller 3rd or 4th, despite the fact that it would have been extra money in his pocket. He shipped down a stock transmission and it arrived about a week later. I swapped out the old transmission and just shipped back my core in the box he used. > > Shipping for me in Texas was just over $100 via UPS ground. Considering the time it would take me to find a reputable local builder in my neck of the woods, it seemed a reasonable price to pay. Now I've got 1000 miles on the new transmission and all is well. > > -Jarrett > 89 Westy powered by Bostig > > > On Nov 23, 2012, at 6:46 PM, Harry Hoffman wrote: > >> Anyone have experiences with any of these vendors? >> >> All come with a core charge (refundable) and shipping costs.
