And I doubt that I've ever really followed a trip plan either.  But I do
get a good idea of the miles and time that will be involved.  And get a
rough idea of where I might stop for the night and then look for parks and
such.  The route planning in S&T is very good and very easy to use.  Either
Garmin Mapsource or Base Camp not so easy.
