What I did was get the Thule Hullavator. I already have some custom brackets on my roof, and I mounted the Hullavator base to that bracket. The rest of the Hullavator is removable, so its not on the camper top permanently.

This allows me to put my canoe on the top of the van easily, and with only a single person. it also brings it down to the side of the van (and away from it). It's nifty, but not cheap.
