However, if it's running and making a lot of noise perhaps and most likely, the fan is running on high speed instead of low speed. A very common ailment on the vans with AC as yours. The ballast resistor that controls the low and high speeds of that fan are behind the left front headlight and they do go bad VERY often allowing the fan to run on only high speed which is VERY noisy. Have your mechanic check that circuit and make sure the fan is working on both low and high speed. Ballast resistor and or the thermo switch in the rad could be at fault. > > > On 2013-03-29, at 6:59 PM, Automatic digest processor <LISTSERV@GERRY.VANAGON.COM> wrote: > >> Dear List, >> >> Despite installing a nearly new fan shroud in my 91 GL - the fan makes a = >> LOT of noise when it's running. >> >> My mechanical Guru checked with his suppliers and came up with a price = >> of $533 just for a new motor 251 959 455M. >> >> This seems expensive to me but then what do I know. >> >> Any one got a working fan motor they want to recycle/sell? > > > Cheers, > > Frank Condelli > Almonte, Ontario, Canada > '87 VW Westy, '00 Kawasaki 250 Sherpa, "98 Ducati 750 Monster & Lionel Trains (Collection for sale) > Frank Condelli & Associates - Vanagon/Vanagon Westfalia Service in the Ottawa Valley > Vanagon Stainless Steel Exhaust Systems > BusFusion a VW Camper camping event, Almonte, ON, June 06 ~ 09, 2013 Peter, I believe I have one from an 86 Syncro that had AC if you can handle the shipping from NE IOWA 50613. Would you need the fan blade and housing or just the motor?? I was Thinking $60 plus the freight. Max
