You have to take the wheel off the van toinstall the center cap. The center cap is for appearance only, and has nothing to do with brake dust getting on the wheel. I use Simple Green and old tootbrush to clean brake dust off wheels. You can even buy a cleaner just for that at a FLAPS sometimes. If left a long time without it getting cleaned off ....makes it hard to clean off somehow I'd say. Normal part of a service... consider rotating tires, adjust tire pressure, replace missing tire valve caps ( metal ones are better as the have a rubber sealing gasket in them. ) and ..clean brake dust off , and check the brake lights.. etc. it goes on and on if you are really servicing and taking care of a vanagon. Since I could not figure out how to re-install it, I just left it off and did not think twice about it. When filling up for gas, I now noticed that that alloy wheel (and none of the other three) is covered in blackish gray stain. I'm assuming this is brake dust? Does the center cap really prevent this or is it just a concidence? And just how to I get this wheel looking shiny aluminum again. I tried using toothpaste and it had little effect. How do I reinstall the center cap? Thanks. > > -David (1987 Wolfsburg GL, Tempe AZ) >
