I'm a marasheenoketchuppotayto man myself; but given that my
interests range over some hundreds of years of English language and I
fly a Ford Tri-Engine for sport and occasionally tell the truth I
have a nuanced view of usage regarding motor and engine.  I do have
some standards, though.  A petard is clearly a hoisting engine, and
