Publicly chastising a fellow member on the List is appropriate behavior. The proper course of action would have been to contact a moderator for resolution. If you must say something of this nature directly to the poster, do so via pmail. 

To borrow "somebody's" words:
What you did "...seemed to me to be very insulting, unkind and totally unnecessary ~ ..."
