THANKS, VANAGON FRIENDS! I'm back home now, and all is well. The deal is that my wonderful Westy has a bad owner! I left for a beach outing without taking the time to check the normal stuff first. (DUH!) I haven't had a single problem for the whole 6 years that I've owned it, and I guess I got a little lazy. (Haste really DOES make waste.) First of all, the van was low on oil. I had oil with me, so I used that and then bought another quart to put away. As for the water situation, I SAW water in the tank, but it was about 3" below the cap. Then I noticed that there were 2 hoses, and one hose was above the water line. I then topped off the tank, and was able to make the 64 mile trip home without a single problem. I used distilled water because I think it's time to flush out the radiator, and didn't want to waste money on coolant that would be thrown out. I have pets and don't want to have any accidents spilling oil or coolant, so I'll probably take it in for an oil change and a radiator flush. If I didn't have your help, I probably would have ended up wasting my single 200 mile tow that my AAA membership allows me; either that, or I would have ended up getting towed to some unknown mechanic and spending a fair amount of $$$ that I can't afford to waste! It's so easy to carry distilled water and a quart of oil for emergencies. (At least I DO have a few basic tools, and take the Bentley everywhere I go.) It's better to lose 5 minutes checking the tires, oil, and water than to lose an entire day at the beach! I've learned my lesson, and am very lucky that it was nothing serious, other than taking advantage of a good, working van and not doing my job to keep it working!
