On an 87 Wolfsburg hardtop...
I'm replacing steering rack and pump and have found a local shop that
will rebuild hoses.  Question: With protective sleeve pulled off, the
pump to pipe hose has a metal connector about midway between the end
fittings.  What's it for?  Does it need to be built in to a new hose?
