Subject:Catalytic converter and muffler, how do they join?

I finally got my Borsal cat from the Bus Depot.
When I looked under my van at the current cat, I cannot see how I can fit the new one or even how a muffler shop could do it.
The last place to replace the cat appears to have cut the existing cat pipe and welded the (generic) cat on. So on the nearside I have the three-bolt flange from the previous cat and part of its pipe then a weld for the new cat pipe (which has no flange at either end just a round pipe), then the other end of the cat pipe is either welded directly to the muffler or some remnant of a previous cat pipe. There is no flange on that side to mount the Borsal cat.
What do I do now? Do I need a new muffler too? I'm not sure how this is all supposed to go together. I think fixing this is going to be beyond my expertise.
