Subject:Re: Suggested Minimum Tools To Carry

Something I should have clarified: my list will be somewhat different
as I have a different engine (Jetta 2.0 gas). Consider what type of
driving you do, and where.

I carry parts that:

save me from a "no start" (ign. switch, rotor/cap, longest ign. wire,
wire from coil to cap, etc.)
are hard to find but relatively small
are small and would provide "convenience" (i.e. alternator brush
assembly. Thank you Loren for that hint)

Like I at least carry parts that would get me out of the bush if a no
start happened. A bike can also be very handy. ;)

This applies to any engine IMO.

I try to limit spares to engine related parts and try not to carry
bulky items. Like I used to carry a starter, but with a manual
transmission, a bump start usually works. That said, bump starting on
a forestry service road might be challenging. Alternators can be found
w/o too much hassle and AFAIK and if it's not the brush at fault, one
can usually limp to the next town.

A related irony. Part of the reason I installed a Jetta engine was to
provide me with easier access to common parts. On my recent road trip,
I neglected to bring a few things. One being the serpentine accessory
belt that drives alt. coolant pump. On my swap, this ended up being a
challenge to find! (I'm running a belt on what some call an "AC
delete" setup. I had found one easily in Bend OR at an import parts
shop but not so easy to find elsewhere). Thankfully O'Reilly auto
parts let me try out a few belt sizes.

Carry new spare belts. ;)

Neil.
