You are 'right on'--it is happening. The Brainard Lake campground in the Indian Peaks W of Boulder was built in the early 60s. Over the last 3 years it has been rebuilt. It is now 3x larger and most of it will handle long rigs. The Forest Service found that few were tent camping and the demand from the big rig RVs was what would pay the fees. Paying the fees is important since this campground and the toll booth the the area are operated by American Land & Leisure. They want to make $$$$ and the Forest Service wants them to (too) so they will continue to operate the area. I'm sure as other older campgrounds are renovated they will move in this direction.
