I had wondered if the OP was interested in a manual transmission. The auto to manual swap has been documented over on thesamba Vanagon/EV forum and I bet someone has posted here of that. It would be $$ if a shop did it? Finding a 5 speed linkage and transmission may be tough though. Neil.
