I had a badly corroded coil to distributor wire cause this on mine recently.
The spring clip (post style on my '85) was missing as well at the coil.
Worth checking. I've also had a bad coil do this, it would run when hot but
would not restart until it cooled off.

Yes, Scott. I am familiar. Went through this back through Christmas with
this same machine. Finally figured out it was the hall sender. It was
actually broken. Replaced it with one from an engine that is out of service.
Now this - symptoms that are the same as the old broken sender.
I considered that the hall sender might be failing - but I wasn't where I
could do the hall sender test. Didn't have ANY tools with me when this
happened. Will be prepared next time it faults however. Then I can test.
But in the mean time - what else? Ken suspects the Temp II sensor is getting
funky!
