With all the space available even in a tiptop Vanagon, I wonder why one
would carry gas in such an inaccessible place as a spare tire well. I have
gotten by for many years with a flat metal one gallon container. My brother
has some nice NATO cans that fit exactly under the rear seat. I would hate
to have to drop the tire just to put in some emergency gas. Usually, by
that point, you're in a not-so-good situation anyway LOL.

My new beetle came originally with a tool set nested in a foam donut that
nests in the tire well. That makes sense for a new beetle, there is no
other place to put the tools, literally. But for a Vanagon, not so much.
