An Allen key with a short end can get in there. I just cut one down when
needed. If the bolt head is stripped you can try some vice grips. If you
remove the crank pulley the pump can be pulled with the pipe still attached.
These Allen screws should always be replaced when the pump is replaced. If
you're not replacing the pump, that hose can be changed just by pulling the
short elbow.

Subject: 1.9L Hose Replacement

I'm getting some seepage from the short water hose that connects the metal
pipe that goes from below the water pump across the engine to a metal
right-angle pipe near cylinder #2. Since I'm replacing the motor mounts and
have the muffler, cat, and heat shield out, this should be easy, right?
The problem is that I still can't get to one of the bolts on the pipe at
the bottom of the water pump. It's just enough behind the crankshaft pully
that I can't get to it. Tom's VW page says use a 12-mm wrench; I'm not so
lucky. My bolts are Allen head. I thought I got an Allen wrench on the
bolt, but when I turned it it just rounded out the inside of the bolt head.
At this point is it possible to remove the water pump with the pipe
attached so I can get to that bolt?
