Did you get the correct coil? I have seen universal or performance coils
destroy the ECU.

Yesterday I changed out the coil. I tested the new one in place using the
distributor wire - and found this. The new coil put out a vigorous
blue-white spark. The old coil put out a not so vigorous orange-yellow
spark. I drove a bit with the new coil and could not get the ignition to
fault. Started every time. Will see what today brings. My fingers are
crossed.
