there is a device already that is an 'engine running indicator.'

it's call a 'tachometer.'

and if you've ever ridden or driven in a really really loud environment..
such as lined up to race with 20 other reving 2 stoke race bikes ( where
you can only actually tell your own engine is running by feeling the
vibrations of it ) you can imagine how useful a tach is for this purpose.

additonally ..
warning lights will be on if key is on but engine isn't running.

we could/should all try this ....just to make sure the fuel pump will
always stop if the engine stalls...
with engine running, foot on brake, let the clutch out until the engine
is stalled..
you should NOT hear the fuel pump continue to run ..it's a safety feature.

I have one modified 2.1 ECU that runs the fuel pump any time the key is
on....'taint right.

all fuel pump cirucits are designed so if engine stalls, like in a crash
...fuel pump will not run.
a few cars even have an inertia switch ,that when pumped hard enough
will stop the electric fuel pump.
some use the alternator signal to keep the pump running,
our vanagons use ignition pulse to keep the ecu informed that the engine
is actually running. If the ecu doesn't see that...
fuel pump signal is turned off.
