While do some maintenance last weekend, I noticed my automatic was seeping a bit of fluid where it joins the final drive. I had the entire unit out this spring to have all the gaskets and fluids replaced along with changing out the cooler to the FAS unit. This work was done by Darrel Cook in Norman, OK, same guy McNeely uses, great mechanic. He was unable to separate the automatic section from the final drive with the unit on his workbench. The cast iron final drive had rusted the 2 pieces together. I have since moved out of state so can't give Darrel another shot at it. I am thinking about letting the new local VW shop give it a try, but I would be surprised if they could get it apart if Darrel couldn't and they will probably charge me a lot to try. Or I could just keep driving it and filling as needed and saving up for a rebuild. The bell housing is cracked on the upper driver's side bolt hole, so I am already out a $750 core deposit. If I go the rebuild route I definitely want to add a Peloquin diff, so I am looking at $3585 for the rebuild ($1600 + $750 + $1235) plus shipping. I am going on a 400 mile road trip this weekend to attend the Texas Bus Fest, so will keep an eye on things. Anyone have any tips on getting these separated or is it a lost cause? Nathan Houston, TX
