Absolutely correct.  Do not reuse an "iffy" pushrod.  They are easy to come by.

No.  These are tubes. You will never get them truly straight, and they will bend again from use. If you can't find anything locally, I'm sure the folks at Van Caf� can sell you some good used ones: www.vancafe.com.  I've gotten used items from them before.
