Like was said, the extra gear that I have, it let's me stay in the
powerband of my inline vw motor and my low gear is great for slow going in
the rough or when the starting out is very steep...otherwise I seldom use
the first gear.....but I often shift 5>4th at 55 to hold speed or
accelerate.

The 5 speed trans is probably the best thing in my vanagon....probably
really a help for a WBX, too. Most every time I pass one of those, they
seem to be really lugging.
