My understanding is that the factory alloys came with 205/70 R14 tires.

As for the original question the 185 or 195R 14 is good.  But the wider
205/70 14 will be a little more stable.  ALL must be up to the right
inflation for solid handling AND must be tires of the proper load rating.
Passenger rated tires are NOT safe on a Vanagon!
