My mechanic did that recently - added some ATF (a pint?) to the engine oil and let it idle for an hour beside his shop. Drained it, refilled with good oil and it was good to go. I still find that if it sits for more than a week, though, it starts clattering again (not so bad). The easy fix now is to drive until it is fully warmed up (20 minutes?) and then let it cool down completely - at least 20 minutes - and then start it up and go. That seems to make the lifter noise go away. One theory put forward by a mechanic friend is that all the parts were getting to equal temperature and cooling together. Who knows why it works, but it works. r On 2015-07-02, 6:43 PM, "Vanagon Mailing List on behalf of PSD" <vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com on behalf of psdooley@VERIZON.NET> wrote: >Anybody try a little ATF in their oil?
