When I drove a gas vanagon I carried an extra set of engine belts and the tools to put them on with. A 10mm socket would tighten the wiper arms if needed, and of course a couple of 13 wrenches would do most everything else. And a screwdriver of course. Traveling the places I go these days in my 83 diesel Westy where people have never heard of a Vanagon and even in a big town parts might require a couple of days wait, I carry: Tools to time the IP. A small set of tools that have proven to be capable or removing the head. It fits in a small plastic box made, I suppose, for fishing lures. I still carry spare belts. I carry alternator brushes, rescue tape, one bellows and rebuilt CV joint and a set of spare injector lines. I carry one of each light bulb used on the car, and the socket that would be required to tighten or remove a front wheel bearing. I carry a couple of injector seats in case one has to be pulled for testing. And that's it. I need to add a spare radiator cap when I find another good one. I have a crappy folding jack stand that I carry with me because who wants to get under a vanagon to look for a coolant leak or check a CV joint with the standard jack? Not me! I am looking for a good version of a folding jack stand if anyone knows of such. I carry several pieces of good 3/4 plywood cut to fit the spaces under the rear seat, essentially lining the drivers side half with plywood, to use both as leveling shims at uneven campgrounds and to use as a jacking platform on soft soil.
