The reason I mention this is Monday I started up my son's '87 that had been sitting for a month, and the clatter was so bad even I was taken aback. I checked to make sure there was still oil in the sump! Two lifters had gone flat, so there was twice the racket. The first one pumped up in 3 miles @3000, and the second about a half mile later. I sounds like it's inside the engine because it is. Don't listen to anyone who says you need a new engine until you have tried this. Weird noises after installing injectors... Good thoughts, Stuart, thanks! These guys, in fact, have a great deal of experience working on Vanagons, which is why I had my van towed there. When I initially had it looked at, I took it to a local Volvo shop where they like to work on Vanagons, or rather, they like the concept of Vanagons, but they're no Vanagon experts. I took it there because the noises it was making made me feel like it couldn't be driven very far. This place is about 5 miles from my house, but I didn't have the revs up that high for that trip. It's currently at the Vanagon-expert shop that's 40 miles away, so I won't be driving it around anywhere. Hoping to hear good news from them soon . . . Marc
