Listserv commands are sent to LISTSERV@gerry.vanagon.com to change settings for your list subscription.
Sending commands to the list shares with everyone what you’re trying unsuccessfully to do. 
Sending email to the listserv results in a long error message.

Richard - resend that exact email to LISTSERV@gerry.vanagon.com instead of VANAGON@gerry.vanagon.com and put the command in the body of the message and you’ll be golden. You should get a confirmation email in about two minutes.
