You're working too hard. 2x4 in the middle, padded or secured as appropriate. FWIW, I discovered my cross-tube was almost sawn through three hours before I had to leave to catch a ferry to Nova Scotia. I propped up one side at a time, cut the tube short, turned solid ends from bronze, glued them in with JB Weld, and was on the road in time. But it's occurred to me since that I could have simply shoved in three inches of the largest-diameter piece of round bar I could find that fit inside the cross-tube and been fine for the trip and maybe forever. https://picasaweb.google.com/117189706757545167023/VanagonPopTopHingeTroubles?noredirect=1 Yours, David
