David, thanks for the pix and the reference of exactly what to look for in
order to spot the problem.  When I came up with my "brilliant" (not) jig, I
overlooked the fact that the 2 hinges in the rear would hold the pop top in
place in order to remove the mechanism.  Fortunately, I will be receiving
help with this "project" at my local Vanagon meetup.
