getting the spinning nut and stud apart depends on the tools you have to use.. first ...try an impact gun ..you might get lucky. after that there's grinding or using a torch. you might not have to replace the whole hub assembly .. or even the stub axle. if a new stud fits fairly well, a small tach weld at the edge of the head of the stud is not the end of the world. in doing brakes on one axle.. especially rear drum brakes, the smart and normal practice is to have both drums off a once.. and do one side at a time.. so when you are putting the first side back together ..you can check which way a spring lies or whatever by looking at the other side. and Same on the second brake. whether you have stock original studs ( there's only one size stock Vanagon rear wheel mounting stud..on all versions of US model Vanagons ) ... or if you have something aftermarket.. check the other studs ..it's not normal at all for one to spin in the stub axle. scott On 8/23/2015 6:02 PM, Joe Novak wrote: > evening all, > > i replaced my rear brake drums this weekend on our 86 westfalia. > first one went great - pretty easy job. > > second one came off and new one went on, no problem... > but when i went to retighten the lugs, > one decided that it wanted to spin in place. > i think the stud has striped itself free of its splined home on the hub. > > does anyone have experience with this? if so, how much work am i in for > in getting this nut free so i can replace the entire hub assembly? > > cheers, > jvk >
