Subject:Re: '84 Vanagon, -- intermittent "Clunk" coming from under middle of van

On the automatics a common cause of failure for the front mount is missing
spacers. Memory is weak sometimes. I believe there are two spacers,
different thicknesses. With the spacers missing the mounting bracket may be
bent.

slight correction...the stud's threads aren't stripped, but the threads in
the transmission case are. Will need to get an insert installed.

John,

I have a similar clunk and at first thought it might be an upper ball joint
but I have been unable to see any abnormal movement from them or the lower
BJs.

I do see that one of the transmission studs that attaches it to the trans
mounting bracket had stripped threads which I need to get repaired. Won't
be sure that that fixes the clunk until I get the mount fixed.

I am getting intermittent "clunk" from under middle of van while driving.
'84 Vanagon, 1.9L engine, automatic transmission. "Clunk" not associates
with turning as would happen with CV problem.

Increasing occurrences of the"clunk." Nothing obvious under van. Had my
Son jump up and down on front bumper while I locked at front suspension with
wheels first turned full right and then full left. Nothing appeared loose.

Got under middle of van. Tried to push up on gas tank.
Seemed secure.

Had Son drive van to end of driveway where the curb drops off more than most
driveways would. Had him run van back and forth over drop off. No clunk.

Any ideas where I should look next?

Thank you,

John
