Assuming your transmissions still has the later style cup and spring on the shift rod the lever should always want to rest in the 3-4 slot. Pushing toward the plate should line you up with the 1-2 slot. Pushing down toward floor so shifter can go spat the stop plate allows reverse. When setting up the shifter I get the transmission into 1st gear. Then turn coupling so that shifter almost touches the stop plate, about 1/8" clearance, then tighten. For a fine adjustment the mount on the transmission can be loosened and that little bit of play in the bolts gives about 1/2 spline of adjustment. Fine tune 1-2 and everything else is in the transmission.
