This wouldn't have helped your tire issue   ;)   but a nice easy upgrade
for the wipers is to replace the stock wiper relay with one from a
Mk3 Jetta or Golf. The number on that relay is 99 IIRC.
I've done this on both my '81 and '88 Westies. It was a
"plug and play" swap. There is info in the archives of this.
