Subject:Re: Dodged a bullet -- blowed the oil filter right off Why, VW using oil filters

VW added oil filters with the type 4 pancake motors with them being used in
the busses starting in 1972. They didn't go to the hydraulic lifters until
the 1977 model year. They type 4 still had a removable inlet screen that
could be serviced at every oil change.

Replaceable oil filters came in with hydraulic lifters. Before then all VWs
had only cleanable pickup screens to filter out the "big stuff".

Makes sense.

Naw, it had the 1600cc dual-port. No oil filter and no particularly easy way
to install one. Man's got to change the oil every 1,500 miles. But it was a
good excuse to adjust the valves anyway.

Good advice. Gotta get me a second car . . .
