Mobil 1 5w50 synthetic is VW rated for the 501.01 and 505.00 oil specs, good for older diesels, don't know about gassers. I use it in my 82 AAZ turbo diesel Westfalia during the Alaska winters. Still keeping things happy even with slightly low oil pressure. No light coming on, but my gauge reads about 12 psi at idle. Improved oil pressure about 10% over 5W40.
