I'd heard of doing this. Is there another product that might be safer than muriatic acid, like POR-15's Metal Prep? I don't know the configuration of piping inside the tank. If I drained it and then added a gallon of muriatic acid or other rust remover, would that find its way to the sump where the possibly clogged inlet screen lies? Will a following gallon or two of gas work to remove it via gravity, or does the fuel pump create a vacuum and it needs to be deployed to remove the contents? If so, would those products harm the fuel pump? Or is this a good deal more complicated? Anyone tried this before?
